Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet

Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet

Kindle Fire vs Nook Tablet

Text by Chloe Albanesius / PCmag

In the battle between the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet, the Fire has a slight edge over the Nook, with about 39.5 percent of PCMag readers saying they have bought or will buy Amazon's $199 tablet.
Of the 8,808 readers who answered yesterday's poll (below), about 29 percent selected the Nook Tablet, while 39.5 percent went with the Kindle Fire.
In the comments, most buyers felt it came down to storage; if you need to access your content on the go or when you're not connected to the Web, go for the Nook Tablet. If you like Amazon's services and can connect to take advantage of the Silk browser, Amazon Prime, and more, the Fire is a good choice.
"Kindle Fire is mostly for people who doesn't go out too much with the tablet or always goes to a place with Wi-Fi. Nook Tablet it's for outsiders and people who is always on the move (also for people who loves hacking it with the latest Android releases)," wrote one reader.
"I like the Amazon AppStore, but that doesn't make the Fire worth it," wrote another.
One longtime Prime member who was on her second Kindle, however, said she had "sold family and friends on it and have already ordered my Fire, can't wait to get it!!!"
Not everyone is on the Nook or Fire bandwagon. About 12.5 percent, or 1,106 people, said they prefer the iPad, regardless of the price difference. About 4 percent were going the other way, opting for the $79 Kindle or $99 Nook. Another 11 percent, meanwhile, were still holding out for something more compelling, like the Asus Transformer Prime. Eight people wrote in the HP TouchPad, but they'll likely be waiting awhile.
The results come as Amazon today announced that the Kindle Fire newsstand will have more than 400 full-color newspapers. Those who subscribe before March 1 will get three free months to 17 Conde Nast magazines like Vanity Fair, GQ, Wired and Glamour.
The Nook Tablet debuts on Nov. 17 and the Kindle Fire is coming Nov. 15. For more, see Amazon Kindle Fire vs. B&N Nook Tablet vs. Nook Color: Spec Showdown, as well as PCMag's Kindle Fire review and hands-on look at the Nook Tablet.

Kindle Fire browser test

Amazon Silk Official Presentation

The web browser on Kindle Fire introduces a radical new paradigm -- a "split browser" architecture that accelerates the power of the mobile device hardware by using the computing speed and power of the Amazon Web Services Cloud. The result is a faster web browsing experience, and it's available exclusively on Kindle Fire.
One of the headline features of Amazon's new Kindle Fire tablet is a completely new Web browser called Silk that is designed with a "split" architecture, allowing it to offload much of the heavy lifting to Amazon's cloud computing cluster for superior browsing performance.

When the user requests a webpage in Silk, the request will be routed to Amazon's servers in the cloud. Amazon will load the webpage on the server side, downloading all of the necessary content elements in parallel. After downloading the content, Amazon will send the compiled page — including HTML, JavaSript, CSS, and images — back to the device as a single stream of data.

Amazon Fire Silk browser demo

The Kindle Fire comes with a new browser call Amazon Silk. The Silk browser splits resources between the device and Amazon's EC2 cloud servers to render pages faster and smoother. The EC2 cloud servers will do the heavy processing power for most of the sites you will visit and will cache the content for you for quick load times and save power on the Kindle Fire. Other browsers have tried something similar to this like Skyfire but not with the power that Amazon's servers have. Watch the video below as it will give you a better idea of how Amazon Silk works and cuts page loading times in half. Makes you wonder if they will make a desktop version and/or offer this on other mobile OS platforms and join a very crowded browser market.

Amazon Kindle Fire video review

Amazon Fire Silk web browser demo. We got up close and personal with the Amazon Kindle Fire. An Amazon associate kindly showed us around the device's OS, demoing multimedia playback, web browsing, and more.

What do we think of the new Amazon tablet?
The Kindle Fire is an amazing device offered for a price that is practically unbeatable. Currently it is very hard to buy one and the waiting lists are getting bigger every day. With this device Amazon is aiming at the huge expanding market of tablets and we think it's just a matter of time an Amazon branded product to be on top of tablet sales.
